Between 1881 and 1883, excavations in the Swedish village of Vendel brought a total of 14 graves to light. Researchers there found a number of weapons and pieces of armour dating from the 6th to the 8th century. These artefacts were so important that even today, similar swords from the same epoch are called "Vendel type." This sword is also contemporary with the period of the Norse hero Beowulf.
With its very straight blade and wide fuller, our spatha is a good example of this type and one of the best available to buy in the UK. Another common features of these weapons is that their crossguards and pommels are both made of metal parts combined with organic material and riveted. Only warriors who distinguished themselves on the battlefield had a ring at the top of their pommel. The tang of this Vendel Spatha is enclosed by a grip of fine wood. The scabbard is made of leather and can be worn over your shoulder.
