British Royal Navy Boarding Cutlass - 1804 Pattern

£135.00

This pattern of sword was introduced during the Napoleonic Wars and saw service at the famous Battle of Trafalgar. Previous cutlasses shared a similar figure 8 hilt design but featured horn or leather grips that deteriorated quickly when exposed to seawater and changes in temperature.

The introduction of an iron grip greatly extended the serviceable life of this sword. The hilts were traditionally painted or japanned to stop them from rusting. The blade has been forged from AISI 1065 High Carbon Steel and has been well-tempered. It is housed in a black hardened buff leather scabbard.

Reviews

Pretty Positive Overall.Review by Edmond
Finally it arrived! This is exactly as I'd imagined it. bit rough. not a pretty weapon. It arrived covered in cosmolene and oil once clean it is pleasing to the hand. As I said not a pretty weapon, there is no finery. This is for dispatching Frenchmen in confined spaces of the high seas as one of hundreds on board a ship of the line. This replica reflects its fairly rough construction but there are no rattles and the blade has a pleasing satin finish. All together though the finishes reflect its lowly status, that is as is should be, and is the very quintessence of a Napoleonic cutlass :)
