Practical Hand-and-a-Half Sword
The Practical broadswords are all based on authentically styled swords in our Paul Chen collection but they are tailored to meet the needs of re-enactment and stage combat. These very popular and affordable weapons feature authentic hilt styling, with fully tempered un-edged and un-pointed blades. They are designed to withstand rugged use while providing the level of safety required by many of today’s re-enactment societies.

The blades are crafted from 1065 high-carbon steel, hardened to 50HRC, which restricts edge-notching to acceptable levels while providing resilience and protection against brittleness. While the blades are substantial, they are fullered to provide balance and good handling characteristics. They feature 1/16” wide edges and rounded tips for safety. The tangs are also substantial, with radiused corners at the blade shoulders and no welds. The end of the tang is riveted over the pommel, which both eliminates any possibility of inadvertent disassembly. The hardwood grips are leather-covered.

Practical Bastard Sword
By customer request Paul Chen has produced a re-enactment version of our SH2250 Bastard sword. The blade is forged in 5160 high-carbon steel, to minimize burring, and the transverse thickness of the guard has been increased, both to provide adequate strength for re-enactment use and to present a safer profile at the ends of the guard.

Another innovation is the provision of an all-leather scabbard, in contrast with the rigid scabbards normally provided with our Practical swords - this is designed both to provide an extra margin of safety when combatants fall on the scabbard in battle and also to minimze the need for replacement scabbards. The sword is supplied with the grip and scabbard in a neutral-colored leather to allow customization to the owners taste.

Roman Pompeii Gladius - Decorated
The Roman Gladius was the primary weapon of the Roman Legionary and was used in conjunction with the 'Scutum' (shield) and 'Pilum' (spear). Its design was strongly influenced by the swords used by the Iberian (Spanish) Celts. It was predominantly designed as a thrusting weapon and was in use in one form or another from the 4th Century BC to the 3rd Century AD.

The Pompeii Gladius takes its name from the archaeological site in Italy where, during excavations, 4 such swords were found. The swords are dated to before 79AD - the year that Pompeii was buried in volcanic ash. The Pompeii Gladius, along with the earlier Mainz Pattern Gladius, would have been issued to the garrison at Hadrian’s Wall. Examples can be seen in H. Russell Robinson’s book "What The Soldiers Wore On Hadrians Wall'".
Our Pompeii Gladius features a turned wood pommel and bone grip. The straight blade is hand forged from steel and in housed in a wooden scabbard with red leather covering and decorated brass fittings. This sword is not designed or recommended for contact reenactment (fighting) but is favoured by living history enthusiasts.

The gladius was the sword of choice for the Roman legions, and many gladiators also chose to use the double-edged sword when they were fighting for their freedom and lives in the Colosseum. After a gladiator in ancient Rome had won his freedom, he was awarded a wooden gladius like this one, called a Rudis, as a symbol of his freedom. Our Rudis is a great retirement gift for military personnel or police officers.
Our training gladius is based on the classic Roman gladius and made entirely of hardwood. The pommel and guard are darker for visual interest. If you plan to use this wooden gladius as a training sword, be careful: the blade is made of wood but it does have a sharp point.
